How to add an invoice download button to your Shopify store
Published on · FacturX
“Hi, could you send me the invoice for my order?” — if you sell on Shopify, you get this message several times a week. The solution: put the invoice where the customer looks for it, so they serve themselves. Here is how, without writing a line of code.
Where do your customers look for their invoice?
Three places, in this order:
- The thank-you page, right after payment — the reflex of business customers who want their receipt immediately;
- The order confirmation email — the one everyone keeps;
- The customer account (order status page), when the need comes back weeks later, for an expense report for example.
A good invoicing app must cover all three. Here is how FacturX installs on each one.
1. The button on the thank-you page
With FacturX, the button is added through Shopify’s checkout customization editor:
- In the Shopify admin, open Settings → Checkout, then click Customize;
- Select the Thank you page;
- Click Add app block and pick Invoice download (FacturX);
- Position the block wherever you want, then save.
The block shows a “Download invoice” button serving the PDF of the current order. The text automatically adapts to the customer’s language (French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch).
2. The button in the customer account
Same principle, on the order status page of customer accounts:
- Settings → Customer accounts → Customize;
- Add the FacturX app block to the order page.
A detail merchants love: FacturX also provides an order action that places the download button directly next to the “Buy again” button — the most natural spot there is.
3. Customizing the button style
A button that clashes with your brand looks sloppy. In the block settings, you control:
- the button text (with already-translated defaults);
- the style: solid button, outline, or discreet link;
- whether to enable business information collection (see below).
Bonus: B2B collection at the perfect moment
The thank-you page is also the best moment to ask a business customer for their invoicing details. FacturX can display a small “Business purchase” form: company name, SIRET, intra-community VAT number. The data is validated and injected into the “Billed to” block of the PDF and into the Factur-X XML — essential for your B2B customers.
What about security?
Every download link uses a unique, unguessable token tied to the order. No sequential number in the URL, no way to enumerate other customers’ invoices. A customer accesses their invoice — only theirs.
The result: zero manual requests
Once the three channels are active — thank-you page, confirmation email, customer account — invoice requests by email virtually disappear. Your customers are autonomous; your support breathes.
