French e-invoicing reform 2026: what changes for your Shopify store
Published on · FacturX
France’s e-invoicing reform is the biggest tax change for French e-merchants in years. From September 1, 2026, it becomes a concrete reality for every business established in France — including your Shopify store. Here is what changes, when, and how to prepare without stress.
The official timeline
- September 1, 2026: every French business, whatever its size, must be able to receive electronic invoices. Large and mid-size companies must additionally start issuing their invoices electronically.
- September 1, 2027: the issuing obligation extends to SMEs and micro-businesses — that is, virtually every Shopify store.
The same deadlines apply to e-reporting (see below), which directly concerns online sales to consumers.
E-invoicing and e-reporting: two distinct obligations
The reform rests on two pillars that must not be confused:
E-invoicing (B2B electronic invoicing)
It covers sales between French VAT-registered businesses. These invoices will have to travel in a structured format (Factur-X, UBL or CII) through an accredited dematerialization platform (PDP) registered with the tax administration.
If you sell to professionals — even occasionally — your B2B invoices will have to follow this circuit.
E-reporting (transaction data transmission)
It covers everything else, which is most of an online store’s activity:
- B2C sales (to consumers) in France;
- international sales (exports, intra-EU).
You will not send every receipt to the administration: you will transmit periodic aggregates (transaction counts, net amounts and VAT per rate), at a frequency that depends on your VAT regime: every ten days under the standard regime, monthly under the simplified regime, every two months under the VAT franchise.
Concretely, what must a Shopify store do?
Shopify does not natively handle French invoicing: no legal numbering, no mandatory mentions, no Factur-X, no e-reporting. You therefore need a dedicated app. Here is the checklist:
- Issue compliant invoices today: mandatory mentions, VAT detailed per rate, continuous sequential numbering. That is already the law, reform or not.
- Adopt the Factur-X format: a regular PDF embedding a structured XML at the EN 16931 profile, the level required by the reform. Your invoices stay readable by your customers AND machine-processable by the platforms.
- Prepare for e-reporting: be able to produce daily aggregates per VAT rate and per flow category (French B2C / international), for the right periods.
- Keep your invoices for 10 years, without any possible alteration.
How FacturX makes you compliant
FacturX was built precisely for this scenario:
- every invoice is automatically generated in the Factur-X EN 16931 profile (PDF/A-3 + validated XML) as soon as the order is paid or fulfilled;
- numbering is sequential and continuous, even if you operate several Shopify stores;
- the e-reporting module computes your daily aggregates per VAT rate, distinguishes French B2C, B2B and international flows, and displays your transmission deadlines based on your tax regime;
- issued invoices are immutable: the PDF is frozen at issuance and served identically for 10 years;
- CSV and FEC exports feed your accountant in one click.
Should you wait until 2027 to get equipped?
No, for three reasons. First, the substantive obligations (mentions, numbering, VAT, retention) apply already. Second, your business customers will start demanding electronic invoices from September 2026. Third, migrating your invoicing in a hurry, in the middle of a legal obligation, is the best way to create numbering gaps — exactly what the tax administration sanctions.
By getting equipped now, your invoices are already in the right format on day one, and your history is clean.
